Why Technology Matters

Modern tools that make dental visits shorter, clearer and more precise

Dental technology is not about gadgets. It is about seeing problems sooner, planning treatment with real measurements, and finishing work in fewer appointments. When your dentist can view your teeth and jaw in three dimensions, guesswork gets replaced by a plan you can see on screen.

At Westlake Dental Associates, digital tools are part of everyday care, not reserved for special cases. Digital X-rays support routine exams. Digital scanning replaces messy impression trays. CEREC lets us design and mill many crowns in a single visit, and 3D cone beam imaging guides every implant we place.

This page brings all of it together, with links to the treatments each technology supports, so you know what to expect before you sit in the chair. The same tools help us diagnose quickly when you need an emergency dental visit.

The technology behind your care, and what each one does for you

Each tool below connects to a treatment we provide. Follow the links to learn how the technology fits into that service.

Same Day

CEREC Crowns

Your tooth is scanned, the crown is designed on screen and milled from a solid ceramic block in our office. Many patients get a finished crown in one appointment, with no temporary and no second visit.

3D Imaging

Cone Beam CT Scans

A 3D scan shows bone volume, nerve canals, sinuses and root shapes that a flat X-ray cannot. It is used when treatment planning calls for it, such as implants, complex extractions or evaluating hidden problems.

3D-Guided Implant Placement

Implant positions are planned on your 3D scan, then transferred to a custom surgical guide. The guide helps place each implant at the planned angle and depth, from single teeth to full arches.

Digital Scanning

A small handheld scanner captures a 3D model of your teeth in minutes. No trays of putty, less gagging, and a precise digital file for crowns, bridges and other restorations.

Digital X-Rays

Digital sensors produce crisp images instantly, often with less radiation than traditional film. Images can be enlarged on screen to spot decay between teeth, bone changes and problems below the gumline.

Tooth-Colored Composites

Modern composite resins bond directly to enamel and match your natural shade. They power mercury-free fillings and cosmetic bonding for chips, gaps and uneven edges.

X-rays
Film

Chemical developing and small images that are hard to enlarge

Digital

Instant, zoomable images, often with less radiation than film

Implant planning
2D Only

Flat X-rays that cannot show bone width or exact nerve depth

Same-Day Crowns

How a CEREC crown is made during a single visit

A traditional crown is sent to an outside lab. With CEREC, the design and milling happen in our office, which is how many patients walk out with a permanent crown the same day.

  • Prep
Tooth preparationAfter numbing, damaged or decayed structure is removed and the tooth is shaped to receive a crown.
  • Scan
Digital impressionA 3D scan of the prepared tooth and its neighbors replaces the putty tray.
  • Design
On-screen designYour dentist designs the crown's shape and bite contacts using the scan data.
  • Mill
In-office millingThe crown is carved from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic, then finished and polished.
  • Bond
Final placementThe crown is checked for fit and bite, then permanently bonded in place.

3D Imaging

What a 3D cone beam scan shows that a regular X-ray cannot

A cone beam CT scanner rotates around your head once and builds a three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw and surrounding structures. Your dentist can rotate and slice that image to measure what matters for your treatment.

  • Bone
Bone height and widthConfirms whether there is enough bone for an implant or if grafting is needed.
  • Nerves
Nerve and sinus positionMaps structures to avoid before any implant is placed.
  • Roots
Root shape and hidden problemsHelps evaluate impacted teeth, unusual root anatomy and areas flat images miss.
About radiation: a dental cone beam scan uses more radiation than a standard dental X-ray but generally less than a medical CT scan. We recommend it only when the added detail will change or improve your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Technology FAQs

A digital impression uses a small handheld scanner to capture thousands of images of your teeth and stitch them into a 3D model on screen. It replaces the traditional tray of putty. Patients find it more comfortable, there is less gagging, and the digital file can go straight to crown design or other restorations.

Yes. Dental X-rays use a very small amount of radiation, and digital sensors often need less than traditional film to produce a clear image. We take X-rays based on your individual needs and risk level rather than on a fixed schedule for everyone.

A dental cone beam scan delivers more radiation than a standard dental X-ray but generally less than a medical CT scan. Because of that, it is used when three-dimensional detail will meaningfully improve diagnosis or treatment, such as planning dental implants. Your dentist will explain why a scan is recommended before taking one.

Many CEREC crowns are completed in a single appointment. The visit covers preparing the tooth, scanning, designing, milling and bonding the crown. Your dentist will let you know ahead of time whether your tooth is a good fit for a same-day crown or would be better served by a lab-made restoration.

CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-strength ceramic and are designed for everyday chewing on front and back teeth. Like any crown, their lifespan depends on your bite, grinding habits and home care. For some situations, such as heavy grinding or specific cosmetic needs, your dentist may recommend a lab-fabricated crown instead.

Guided implant surgery starts with a 3D scan of your jaw. The dentist plans each implant's position, angle and depth on the scan, then a custom surgical guide is made to transfer that plan to your mouth. The guide helps place implants exactly where they were planned, which supports precise results from single teeth to full arches.
